A small neighborhood on the edge of the city. The neighborhood does not have the grandeur, but every person is cheerful, very connected to each other. Ramesh, an ordinary shopkeeper, lives at one end of the neighborhood. Ramesh doesn't want much in life, only this - to keep his small shop going, and for everyone in the family to be happy.
Ramesh's family consists of his wife Lata, daughter Riya and younger son Rani. Ramesh earns by running the shop all day long, so the family survives. Although this income did not save much, their life was happy. But one day a gentleman entered Ramesh's shop.
The gentleman was dressed very elegantly, and by the watch on his wrist, it was clear that he was quite rich. Ramesh respected him very much and said, "What will you do, baby?"
The gentleman smiled a little and said, “I did not come to your shop to buy anything. I have come to make you an offer.”
Ramesh asked in surprise, “What kind of proposal?”
The gentleman said, “I want to give you money, but I want to take something from you in return. Do you agree?”
The first question that arose in Ramesh's mind was, "Do I have anything that you want?" But he did not directly ask that, “Babu, money is a good thing. But what do you want from me in return?”
The gentleman smiled and said, “I want to buy your happiness. You take the money and give me happiness. Then you will see how much your life changes."
Ramesh was shocked. Want to buy happiness? How about this! Still curious, he asked, "How much money will you give?"
The gentleman said, "One crore."
Ramesh's eyes widened. One million rupees! He never dreamed of so much money. He started thinking, "What can you do if you get so much money!" He only thought about money. But once he thought, happiness is a big thing. Can it be sold for money?
The gentleman understood his thoughts and said, “Think about what you can do with money. You can buy a big house, you can marry your daughter well, you can grow your business.”
Conflict in Ramesh's mind. So much money on the one hand, and his happiness on the other. Finally he thought, "If you have money, happiness will come by itself." Thinking this, he agreed. The gentleman said, "That's it." I am sending the money. And you keep the happiness with me.”
Ramesh returned home and told everything to Lata. Lata was surprised at first, but finally said, "If it's good for us, then fine."
The next day, a check of Rs 1 crore arrived in Ramesh's hand. Seeing so much money, he thought, "From now on, all the problems in our life are over." First he expanded his shop, introduced new products. Then bought a big house. The daughter's marriage was arranged with the son of a rich man of the city.
Within a few days, everything changed. Ramesh is now rich, people respect him, big people come to the house. But once Ramesh realized, there is nothing in his life. That cheerful atmosphere is no more, there is a void somewhere. The smile on Lata's face has faded, Riya can no longer spend time with Rani like before.
Everything seems to bother him, but he doesn't understand why. His shop is bigger now, but the fun conversations he used to have with the old customers are gone. New customers just ask the price, but no relationship is formed.
Meanwhile, Lata is getting quiet day by day. Ramesh asked Lata one day, “What happened to you? Why are you so quiet?”
Lata said, “I think we are missing something. How sweet our life used to be, and now everything seems to have changed.”
Ramesh then started thinking, "Where did I go wrong?" I got so much money, but why did the happiness decrease?" One day she remembered the man who had bought her happiness. Now he understood that happiness cannot be bought with money. He remembered, "I sold happiness!"
One day, Ramesh started looking for that gentleman. After much searching he found the gentleman. The gentleman was standing in front of a big house. Ramesh went in front of him and said, “Babu, I want my happiness back.”
The gentleman said, "Once you have sold it, can it be taken back?"
Ramesh cried and said, "I don't want this money of mine. You return my happiness.”
The gentleman smiled a little and said, “I can return your happiness, but there is one condition. You have to give up everything you have.”
Ramesh thought, “To give up everything? But then what will I live with?” But he decided in his heart, "If I get my happiness back, I'm willing to give up everything."
Then the gentleman said, “If you really agree, then do what you have to do. Happiness will return to you again.”
Ramesh gave up everything, his big shop, new house, all arrangements for his daughter's wedding. He returned to the small shop where he used to work. Lata, Riya, Rani accepted everything. Day by day the old smile returned to their faces. Ramesh realized that not money but real happiness is the foundation of his life.
In this way Ramesh regained his happiness. Now he understood that although money is important in life, happiness should never be sold for money.
